Brunswick Work Center is a mixed custody facility that opened in 1982 in Lawrenceville Virginia that serves two purposes. The facility acts as a reception and classification center for women in the region and retains a higher custody level for these inmates, and also serves as a work center for minimum security offenders. In order to qualify for level 1 security inmates must not be convicted of murder, a sex offense, kidnapping, or have a history of escape. Additionally offenders can not have any disciplinary infractions for the past two years. As an intake and reception center for women, Brunswick is responsible for receiving incoming offenders from surrounding jails and assessing and classifying them into their proper security level, then assigning them a permanent facility. Inmates who are part of the work center are either assigned a job or if they qualify for work release, the offender will report to a job in the surrounding community during the day and back to the prison at the end of their shift. Work release gives the inmate an opportunity to build a financial foundation prior to discharging from prison and gives them a higher level of accountability and responsibility
